What Is PE VCI Masterbatch

PE VCI masterbatch is a specialized functional masterbatch used to protect metal products from corrosion.

What is PE VCI masterbatch?

This functional masterbatch is made from PE (such as LDPE and LLDPE) as a base material, supplemented with a concentrated VCI vapor corrosion inhibitor and additives.
Appearance: Typically white or light yellow cylindrical pellets.
Working Principle: After the masterbatch is processed into a film, the VCI continuously releases gas molecules at room temperature, adsorbing onto the metal surface and isolating it from corrosive media.
Key Features: Long-lasting rust protection (typically 2 years, up to 5 years), multi-metal compatibility, and safety and non-toxicity.
Additional Ratio: Typically mixed with standard PE pellets at a ratio of 1:50 (approximately 2% addition).
Applicable Processes: Blown film, cast film, injection molding, blow molding, etc.

Working Principle: The core of PE VCI masterbatch is the VCI (vapor corrosion inhibitor). When the masterbatch is processed into a film and wrapped around metal, the VCI continuously releases gas molecules at room temperature. These gas molecules absorb onto metal surfaces, forming a protective film just one molecule thick that effectively isolates corrosive media like moisture and oxygen from the metal, thereby preventing rust. This process is automatic, requiring no direct contact.

Key Features
PE VCI masterbatch offers the following outstanding features:
* Long-lasting rust protection: Up to two years of rust protection, and even up to five years depending on the application.
* Multi-metal compatibility: Provides excellent protection for a wide range of metals, including steel, cast iron, stainless steel, copper and copper alloys (brass, bronze), zinc alloys, cadmium alloys, chromium alloys, nickel alloys, and electroplated metals.
* Safe and environmentally friendly: Many products are certified by SGS and REACH, comply with RoHS requirements, and are nitrite-free.
* Efficient and uniform: The anti-rust gas penetrates every corner of the packaging, including grooves and blind holes in complex metal products, which are difficult to reach with traditional methods.
* Easy to use: Simply mix with the base resin in the correct proportions for subsequent processing.

🏭 Main Applications
Rust-proof products made from PE VCI masterbatch using the above processing methods can be widely used in the following applications:
Automotive Manufacturing: Packaging and medium- and long-term storage of engines, brake discs, precision parts, molds, etc. for rust prevention.
Machinery Manufacturing: Protection of bearings, machine tools, agricultural machinery, gears, hydraulic components, etc.
Electronic and Electrical Equipment: Moisture and rust protection for control panels, motors, and communication equipment components.
Aerospace and Marine: Protection of engine components, turbine parts, and precision instruments.
Hardware and Tools: Storage of knives, measuring tools, drills, power tools, etc.

⚠️ Usage Precautions
To ensure optimal performance of the rust-proof masterbatch, please note the following:
1. Addition Ratio: The recommended mixing ratio is 1:50 (approximately 2%) with the PE base material. The specific ratio can be fine-tuned based on the desired film thickness and rust resistance level.
2. Uniform Mixing: The masterbatch must be thoroughly mixed with the base resin (such as LDPE or LLDPE) to ensure uniform distribution of the anti-rust ingredients and avoid dead spots.
3. Processing Temperature Control: During processes such as film blowing, the heating temperature in each zone of the equipment should not be too high. It is generally recommended to keep it below 190°C and no higher than 200°C. Excessive temperatures may cause the VCI ingredient to decompose and become ineffective, and produce a pungent odor.
4. Avoiding Interference with Masterbatch: If you are preparing a colored anti-rust film, carefully select the masterbatch. Incompatible masterbatches may react with VCI, affecting the anti-rust effect. It is best to consult the masterbatch supplier for recommendations on compatible masterbatches.
5. Moisture-Proof Storage: Unused masterbatch should be sealed promptly and stored in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture from agglomerating and becoming ineffective. The shelf life is typically 1-2 years, so please be aware of this when purchasing.

Summary
PE VCI masterbatch is a functional plastic additive that provides highly effective and long-lasting protection for metal products through the release of volatile anti-rust gases. It effectively protects a wide range of metals, providing a long-lasting rust-proofing effect. It is also user-friendly and requires only a small amount to impart excellent VCI properties to ordinary PE plastic film. It plays a vital role in metal anti-rust packaging across numerous industrial sectors.
